Urine SmokeScreen Procedures

  1. SmokeScreen is supplied loosely assembled in two parts inside a sealed pouch. The upper syringe is for sample collection. The lower part is where the reaction or test takes place.

  1. SmokeScreen detects the presence of cotinine and all the nicotine breakdown products.

  1. Unprocessed urine should be collected in a container with a wide neck, such as our urine collecting cup.

  1. The urine should be allowed to cool to room temperature. If the sample is warmer it will give an erroneous result.

  1. Draw the urine into the syringe by holding the plunger of the syringe between the thumb and finger while supporting the cap with the other fingers. The plunger should be pulled to the end. There will be a small bubble of air in the syringe.

  1. Place the syringe inside the barrel. In which is a membrane positioned half-way down the tube. Place the tip of the syringe lightly onto the membrane.

  1. Holding the white cap and using the small flanges on the side push down evenly with two thumbs so forcing the syringe down and through the membrane. This is best done with a quick snap action.

  1. The 'click' will indicate the cap is now in place and the test activated.

  1. IMMEDIATELY push down the plunger, squirting the urine sample into the tube and ontop of the chemicals.

  1. QUICKLY mix the sample and urine together. This is best done by holding the cap FIRMLY between finger and thumb of one hand and tapping the bottom of the tube repeatedly with the forefinger of the other hand. This will cause a vortex or eddy in the liquid. Alternatively, a vortex mixer can be used. Mix the liquid for 30 seconds.

  1. The tablet in the liquid will start to fix and bubble. If the urine sample is from a smoker after about 1 minute the liquid will start to turn pink/orange. Leave the test to develop the correct colour for 6 minutes after addition of the sample.

  1. To assess the semi-quantitative smoking habit use the colour chart. First, look at the colour of the urine sample. Choose the inner most ring which compares to that colour then when the test has run for 6 minutes find the colour in the remainder of that sector and this equates to whether the smoker is 'light', moderate, heavy or very heavy.

With SmokeScreen Analyzer for quantitative assessment of nicotine intake

  1. SmokeScreen is supplied loosely assembled in two parts inside a sealed pouch. The upper syringe is for sample collection. The lower part is where the reaction or test takes place.
  2. SmokeScreen detects the presence of cotinine and all the nicotine breakdown products.
  3. Unprocessed urine should be collected in a container with a wide neck, such as our urine collecting cup.
  4. The urine should be allowed to cool to room temperature. If the sample is warmer it will give an erroneous result.
  5. Draw the urine into the syringe by holding the plunger of the syringe between the thrumb and finger while supporting the cap with the other fingers. The plunger should be pulled to the end. There will be a small bubble of air in the syringe.
  6. Place the syringe inside the barrel. In which is a membrane positioned half-way down the tube. Place the tip of the syringe lightly onto the membrane.

  8. The 'click' will indicate the cap is now in place and the test activated.
  9. IMMEDIATELY push down the plunger, squirting the urine sample into the tube and on top of the chemicals.
  10. Quickly place the device inside the hole of the Analyzer, cover, and press the 'Start' button.
  11. The Analyzer will mix the test for a short while. It will wait for a few minutes and mix again. After another short space of time it will display the result in Cotinine Equivalent Concentration (CEC) because all the nicotine metabolites are compared to a cotinine standard curve in the instrument memory.
  12. The result will remain until the next test is run or the instrument is switched off.
