Saliva SmokeScreen Procedure

SALIVA COLLECTION FOR DETERMINATION OF COTININE TO ASSESS SMOKING BEHAVIOUR

  1. CONTENTS: one white swab in a plastic sheath, one plastic collecting bottle with flip lid and stamped addressed envelope (SAE).

  1. Cotinine is a breakdown product of nicotine. It is important that you have refrained from smoking, eating, especially coloured sweets and confectionary and drinking coloured liquids 15 minutes prior to sampling.

  1. Before taking the sample please try to stimulate the saliva flow by running your tongue around your gums.

  1. When you are ready please remove the white swab from its plastic sheath.

  1. Place the swab in your mouth to absorb the saliva. To begin with the swab is hard but will soon soften with the saliva. Move it around your mouth and under your tongue to collect the sample.

  1. Once you feel the swab is saturated (this may take a few minutes) please flip the top of the collection bottle. Then remove the swab from your mouth and place inside the opened plastic collector and push the swab against the grid half way down. This will squeeze the saliva into the bottom of the collector.

  1. The test requires 1.5 ml of saliva. This level is marked on the side of the collector. If you have not produced this amount please return the swab to your mouth and collect some more.

  1. Once finished please return the swab to its plastic sheath and throw I away in general waste, then write your name on the label. Please close the lid firmly and tape down to prevent reopening.

THANK YOU
